Canon's L lenses are their top of the line, "professional grade" lenses. Canon "L's" feature the best optics and the finest manufacturing techniques. There is a marked difference between the optics used in "L" lenses and non-L lenses. With the pro level glass, you can expect less image distortion, less diffraction, and an increase in the final image quality of your pictures. The cost is, however, literally the cost. You can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to several thousand dollars for both used an new L lenses, depending on the range.
